Image size recommendations

This article lays out recommended image sizes for:

Quick glance at recommended image sizes:

Compression

In all of the cases below we save the resized/cropped versions in the same format as upload (png, jpeg for example). For jpeg we use 85% quality. If an image goes through the cropping process but remains the same size (i.e. it’s not actually cropped) then we will use the original image. This is important for jpegs because it means we don't add any extra compression artifacts by resaving.

Intranet background images

If you choose to include a background image from the Branding editor, we recommend you not exceed the width of 2000px and height of 650px for the image. Also, the image cannot exceed 500KB.

Carousel images

When three images are shown in the Carousel (using the Showcase layout), we use the Widescreen crop for cover image (16:9) image for the larger panel, and the Square crop for thumbnail version for the smaller panels.

However the panels aren't actually square, they're rectangle, so we crop the sides of the square slightly.

How big is the cropped image?

The actual size of the thumbnail image will depend on the crop you've selected from the original image during content creation. If the image is being displayed at 16:9 then it's exactly the same image. If you do not resize the selection box, the thumbnail will be 500x500px. If that's the case, the cropped version for the Carousel would be 437x500px.

Logo

Simpplr recommends using a .png file format for your company logo. Ask your Marketing team for the right file format, or use any number of free online png converter tools.

The recommended logo size is 540 (width) x 144 (height) px. Simpplr will automatically resize the logo to the maximum height of 48px. The maximum file size that can be uploaded is 200KB.

The favicon image should be at least 260x260px size logo/icon, but preferably in png format and of 500x500px size.

Employee Newsletter

For a Newsletter banner, the minimum width is 650px. We recommend using an 800 x 100px image. Though there is technically no maximum height, using an image that's too tall isn't the most appealing.

Users can specify the width of an email in the newsletter's theme settings and the images will be scaled to fit automatically. The safest rule is always to make the images the same width as the email (Page width setting) in a landscape/16:9 ratio. The page width and block spacing settings in the theme can affect the image size, the column layout they use and the appearance setting (for the smart blocks).

Max upload file size is 5MB. Simpplr takes the image as given and doesn't do anything to optimize the image; therefore, it’s recommended images are optimized before uploading.

Recognition badges

Recognition badges should be 200 x 200px  and should have a transparent background. The maximum file size is 2MB.

  • Please add the size requirement for a site image. The site cover image requirements are in there, but I don't see the site image requirements on this page or on any of the other support pages. Thanks!

  • Hi, Keri!

I've been using Simpplr since 2019 and have used image sizes documented in earlier support articles which had a recommended size of 500x500 px and minimum size as 320x320 px for Site Images, both of which are larger than the size it is displayed at on the site.

I have regularly used 500x500 px size images in PNG format for site images and found that has worked out well for us.

    Thanks,
    Betsy

  • What are the specs for the album covers on carousels?

  • Hi Nicole. Album cover images are the same specs as any other image in an album. These can be any size, but the system will automatically resize the image to a maximum of 1600px width/height.

  • Hi Matthew! Thanks for the quick response. I understand that the album cover should have the same specs as the rest of the album pics. I'm wondering about when an album is promoted to a carousel. The specs outlined in the article for the carousel image cropping (i.e., 16:9 for the main image, and 437x500 px for the smaller ones) don't seem to directly apply to albums since the carousel view for albums also includes previews of several of the pictures therein. Do you have the specs for album cover cropping in the carousels available?

  • Hi Krystal. Apps launcher icons need to be 220x80 px. This article goes into more detail on adding apps, as well as icons for the most popular apps we see used that are available for download.

  • Hello!

Recently (like within the last week), I've noticed that if I upload an image to a content page that's smaller than the recommended size of 1088x612, a fuzzy version of the same image shows up behind that image to fill the space around it. It looks OK sometimes, but other times it, frankly, looks awful -- especially if the image is way too small.

I have Photoshop and can put too-small images on a white background sized at 1088x612, but not all of our content creators have the skill/software to do this, and I don't have the bandwidth to help everyone with their images.

Is there a way to turn this "fuzzy background" feature off? I'm not a fan.

    Thanks,

    Michelle Barnes

  • Hi Michelle. You shouldn't have to use the blur background option if you don't want. Do you see the options to make the background a different color like in the screenshot below? If so, you can make it any color you'd like.

  • Michelle Barnes - This is definitely the case with tile images and something that has always bothered me also, but I haven't experienced it with cover images. Sometimes a tile image will be the right size but if you change the layout it will get bigger and get blurry. We use a lot of trial and error with images to get them to display properly in Simpplr. I was told that Simpplr intentionally reduces the quality of images to make them load faster, but that was a long time ago. I'm not sure if that is still the case. To the best of my knowledge there isn't any way around this but I would love if this were fixed so images from Canva and PhotoShop were displayed true to quality and size!

  • Hi, Matthew,

I do not have those background color options. Is this a new feature? Or a feature that I need to turn on somehow?

  • Hey Michelle. No enablement needed for this feature. If you're not seeing the same thing I had in my screenshot, that sounds like an issue. If you reach out to Support or your CSM, they can dig into it and find out what's going on. Is your org upgraded to 23.09, the latest release?

  • I just ran into the same issue that Michelle mentioned. Here is what it looks like: We also do not have this background image you mentioned and are on the most recent update.

  • Hi Matthew! I'm also still having blurry tile images no matter how much I try to work with sizing (including the listed sizing). Has there been any fix for this yet? Any confirmed size that works?

  • Hi Jeanine, could you send the specs of the images you're using? And is this in reference to specifically the Image tile, or images within other tiles (HTML or links tile for example)?

  • Hi Matthew, it is a media/image tile with a hyperlink. I've tried 400 X 400, 500 X 500, and 1086 X 1086. It is an image tile. When I click "edit," the image for the tile is perfectly clear, but as soon as it's on the dashboard, it becomes blurry. However....I just decided to share a screenshot and it has magically been fixed! Across all of these types of tiles across our sites! Did you do something?! :)

  • Oh great! Glad to hear. I didn't do any magic, promise. But let us know if this issue happens again, and we can have our Support team look into it.
